A law has been passed in Karnataka requiring BPL Ration Card holders who have more than five acres of land, two-wheelers, TVs or refrigerators to return them by the end of March or face legal action.Minister Umesh Katti told a press conference in Belagavi that, in order to be considered BPL, one needs no more than five acres of land, three cycles, a television, and no freezer. In the absence of these criteria, the Karnataka minister said, the BPL card could not be used by people with an income of more than Rs 1.20 lakh per year. As a result of the minister’s statement, the Congress government reacted, and party workers demonstrated in front of several ration shops in Bangalore.
